The novels set in the suburban land of New York. Where a strange family just moved in with false names and concealed past. The family consist of a father and his three sons with the memories of a dead woman, who is the wife and mother of the two children. And These are called Goldens.
Now i can't say this is the average story of an immigrant family it is much more than that. The story is told from the perspective of an neighbor 'rene', who has keen interest in this strange family. Who also happens to be an ambitious Director. And decided that these Goldens can be his big project. He befriend the Goldens and try to uncover their past. and the story is told in this uncommon way where its sometimes a recollection of many articles, many conversations . The story follows a movie like style. There are phrases like CUT, fade away, zoom in. To emphasize the cinematic nature of the story.
Salman Rushdie is the master of words. Each line make you wordgasm.
The book start with a very ambitious plot. Lots of things happening. Author touches many current issues like Gun violence, Trum president ship, mental health and put them subtly in the novel. Also i am amazed by the knowledge of Rushdie in wide topics. He drops many refrences to pop culture. Also it covers many political environment of India and America. Basically this book at a point become a huge satire on American Politics. where Rushdie describe it all using DC comic universe.
I quite liked the first half of this novel.
The novel also many time feels like a recreation of Greek tragedies, nay , Roman tragedy. The book hint about it quite often too. Moreover the name Nero gave his sons are derived from Roman mythology.
Although i found the whole plot quite ambitious which didn't stand out till the end. But the characters balances it all out. Well rounded with all the background even the minor character are well built.
The book left me longing for more. Although the ending was satisfying . This is the most recent piece of literature i have read in a while.
Lately i am binging through 90's and before books mostly. There is so much good literature to catch up to.
